MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT RESEARCH & INNOVATION York's new strategic research plan Building on Strength provides a vision for accelerating the growth and development of research, scholarship and creative activity at York over the next five years. Supporting the University's Academic Plan, Building on Strength, articulates the unique character of research at York, in which the quest for discovery and innovation is guided by commitments to critically engaged scholarship, advancing social justice and providing a lasting legacy of benefits to cultures and societies. Researchers at York are seeking to better understand the human condition and the world around us, and to employ the knowledge we gain in the service of society. It is through this plan, that this research vision is being actualized and implemented. As a leading research university, we are investing in the growth and development of our research as a foundational part of our efforts to grow our academic reputation. Across a vibrant, dynamic and growing community, our researchers are actively engaged in internationally-acclaimed, cutting-edge research. At York, we believe in a collaborative approach to research, which involves partnerships with government, community agencies, other universities and colleges, and industry. Research at York is research with an impact and research that makes a difference. Through a strategic combination of broadly based and focused investments over the course of the next five years, York will continue its impressive development as a leading Canadian research university whose scholarship enhances our culture and improves our society. The plan is built upon and informs Faculty and Unit-level plans, providing a platform upon which researchers across the University are empowered to achieve their objectives. I am pleased to report that the University Senate has unanimously approved York's new strategic research plan, which has been the effort of an eight month comprehensive consultation process with the University community, as well as internal and external research partners. As you browse through the brochure, I invite you to read and learn more about research at York. The full plan is available for download at Robert Haché Vice-President Research & Innovation
