36 YorkU Fall 2014 Guo, Jian (Bob) (MBA) was appointed director with Environ- mental Waste International Inc. in March, where he uses his consider- able expertise to navigate the com- pany through client and investment oppor tunities in his native China. Guo is the founder and chief execu- tive of f icer of Goldenmount Global Investments Ltd., an exempt market dealer, and the managing partner of Goldenmount Partners Fund Inc. Wala, Amar (BFA) premiered his documentar y f ilm The Secret Trial 5 at the 2014 Hot Docs Canadian Inter- national Documentar y Festival in Toronto. The f ilm, which explores the story of f ive men held in Canada without tr ial, was funded through the Doc Ignite crowdfunding pro- gram at Hot Docs, the Toronto Ar ts Council and Telefilm Canada. 2007 Kanter, Dan (BFA) is a multi-instru- mentalist, guitar ist and per form- ance coach who currently works as musical director and lead guitar ist for Canadian superstar Justin Bieber. Kanter was recently announced as the newest judge for the seventh season of Y T V's talent- search show "The Next Star." He returned to York in February to par- ticipate in the award-winning "this is my time" campaign by shar ing how his time at York has helped his career. Laviolette, Byron (BA '04, BA '06, MA) is currently working with The Mission Business, a startup consul- tancy incubated at ING Direct's Orange Space. The Digi Award-win- ning interactive adventure lab helps today's businesses imagine and exper ience their future and allows them to test, rehearse and iterate on their current strategic planning in real time and in person. Wiseman, Christopher (BFA) won three 2014 Canadian Screen Awards for his documentar y f ilm The Defector, including best documen- tar y, best direction in a documen- tar y and the diversity award. Wiseman's f ilm centres on a human smuggler who leads Nor th Korean defectors across borders for a living. 2008 Krukowski, Sandra (BA) was named account manager with FunctionFox, a leading provider of time and project tracking sof tware for small creative companies, in April. McGunnigle, Stacey (BFA) is a former member of the Second City Toronto comedy performance troupe who recently landed the titular role in the 2014-15 season of a new NBC pilot, titled "Ellen More Or Less." The T V show centres on a plucky woman who used to be overweight, but has since shed the pounds and is read- justing to life. Pyke, Judith (MA) has released a new hour-long documentar y f ilm, Twin Life: Sharing Mind and Body, which captures a year in the life of conjoined twin sisters Tatiana and Kr ista Hogan. The documentar y aired in March on CBC's "Doc Zone." Tekatch, Tyler (MA) is a Hamilton- based f ilmmaker and ar tist. His interactive video installation, Terrors of the Breakfast Table, f inished its run at the Art Gallery of Hamilton in May. The interactive project aimed to capture the peculiar logic of dreams and the uncanny feelings they evoke. See more of Tyler Tekatch's work at 2009 Dhaliwal, Ravinder Pal (LLM) is a Canadian barr ister and solicitor for the Cour t of Queen's Bench. He is recognized as a lawyer in the Union of India and has been qualif ied by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada's National Committee on Accreditation. He is currently working for Manitoba Legal Aid as a private panel member and practises law in the area of civil litigation, cor- porate, real estate, immigration law and administrative advocacy. Dickson, Whitney (BES) published her f irst full-length science-f iction novel, The First Born of the Dead, with Double Dragon Publishing in August 2013. As a student at York, Dickson served on the news staf f at Excalibur and Winters Free Press. Li, Luo (BFA '05, MFA) released his f ilm Emperor Visits the Hell to major acclaim, garnering several prizes at many international f ilm festivals, including the Dragons and Tigers Award for Young Cinema at the 2012 Vancouver International Film Fes- tival. The f ilm also earned a place in the Museum of Modern Art's annual New Directors/New Films ser ies in New York City. Metivier, Anthony (BA '02, MA Win- ters '04, PhD Winters) is the founder of the Magnetic Memor y Method, a systematic, 21st-centur y approach to memor izing foreign language vocabular y, dreams, names, music and poetr y in ways that are easy, elegant, effective and fun. He is also the author of many books, scholarly ar ticles, poetr y collections and novels, including his bestselling How to Learn and Memorize German Vocabulary…Using a Memory Palace Specifically Designed for the German Language. Currently living and writing in Berlin, Metivier is actively memorizing all of Bach's cello com- positions for the electric bass. Weiss, Adrienne (MA) recently pub- lished her collection of poetry, There Are No Solid Gold Dancers Anymore, through Nightwood Editions. 2010 Bandeira, Kenneth (BA Hons. Founders) obtained his juris doctor at the University of Windsor in 2013. He is currently ar ticling at Neiman, Callegari, Barristers and Solicitors, and is in the process of becoming a licensed lawyer. Sarkeesian, Anita (MA) is a femi- nist, media critic and the creator of "Feminist Frequency," a web ser ies that explores the representations of women in pop culture narratives.
